I've been partnering with IONOS for hosting since 2015. Looking back along the trail, it feels like a true stroke of luck. Especially when embarking on the early stages of a project, there are built-in features I simply wouldn't want to hike without. As a freelance web designer, hosting is always a multifaceted landscape. In the following article, I want to share the trail-tested experiences I've gathered with IONOS.

While the support tier varies depending on your plan, my experience has shown their team to be exceptionally competent and helpful. Good to know: IONOS offers core products alongside optional add-on packages across all three domain hosting areas. For the vast majority of journeys, the standard plans are fully sufficient—the extra features are naturally tailored to larger international enterprises or expansive e-commerce stores.
So far, I haven't encountered any uptime issues across my website projects. Peak server loads scale effortlessly when traffic surges. Overall, performance across these terrains is outstanding.
In the vast majority of cases, performance is already stellar right out of the box. Looking ahead, I’d love to see paid add-ons like CDN deployment or server-optimized caching bundled directly into standard plans.
IONOS is a major player, yet they've maintained genuinely high-quality support. Inquiries via phone are handled swiftly, with deep technical expertise and zero fuss. Often, they even shared extra trail tips on how to fine-tune my setup even further.
Setting up a project is delightfully straightforward. Pick an available domain, choose the matching WordPress hosting plan, and head through checkout. From there, you're ready to hit the ground running. For smaller ventures, the "START" plan with one website and an integrated email address is plenty. At just €4 per month (as of August 2023), it's highly accessible—yet packed with essentials like a fast database, SSL certificate, and included domain. Once booked, IONOS provisions your account. Inside the dashboard, you'll find everything regarding your plan, database, domain, and email setup. You can also connect your account directly with Mount Inspire as an IONOS Agency Partner, granting me direct access to fine-tune key settings for you.
The entire control panel is visually clean and uncluttered. All essential tools are just a few clicks away. Linking a registered domain to a database, launching WordPress, or spinning up a subdomain? Done in minutes, without breaking a sweat. Through the hosting hub, you have full access to manage your site's files, plugins, content, and the .htaccess file. Should an update ever stumble, you can troubleshoot with ease and restore your site in no time.
As with any website, the trail never truly ends. New WordPress core releases, Elementor Pro updates, plugin patches, evolving privacy regulations, PHP iterations, and more. There are countless moving parts that can cause a site to stumble or display unexpected quirks. That’s why it's great that IONOS provides daily backups, which I supplement with weekly backups via a dedicated plugin. This ensures your site can safely roll back to a solid foundation with minimal data loss. One small drawback: upgrading to newer PHP versions must be initiated manually. If left untouched for too long, it triggers paid PHP Extended Support for legacy versions. Beyond that, the ongoing management and support from IONOS remain thoroughly professional.
Overall, I am genuinely satisfied with the tools and services IONOS provides. The base offerings are robust, and upsells are never pushed aggressively. The interface is intuitive, and the contract terms are fair. I can wholeheartedly recommend IONOS, especially to small and medium-sized ventures.
